|
Plans are afoot to bring back one of Brighton’s most loved events in 2010.
The Alternative Miss Brighton is one of the city’s most legendary entertainments and follows the British theatres historic traditions of Vaudeville, variety and Comedy all focused around an outrageous ‘beauty’ pageant.
The Alternative Miss Brighton was first staged way back in 1987 in the Zap Club and subsequently went on to wow packed audiences at such prestigious venues as the Chinese state circus, The Brighton Dome and Brighton’s Theatre Royal.
The madcap show has been hosted by such household names as Rhona Cameron, Nicolas Parsons, Simon Fanshawe, Michelle Collins, Julian Clary, Graham Norton and the unforgettable Lily Savage who made her mixed gay/straight audience debut in the show and was so brought to the attention of a wider audience for the first time.
The show is traditionally a mix of top cabaret entertainment alongside the over the top beauty pageant and has featured a star studded parade of celebrities including Bob Downe, Maxine Barry, Fay Presto, Hugh Jelly, Leigh Bowery, Cynthia Payne, HRH Regina Fong, Dave Lynne, Maisie Trollette and Gayle Tuesday (page three stunner) to name but a few. The real stars of the event are always the pageant contestants who range from the sublime to the ridiculous, amazing audiences with their outrageous costumes, creations, humour and talent.
A jury of celebrity judges are handed the difficult task of awarding the crown and winners prizes that can amount to a tidy sum of money and of course the sought after year long title of Brighton’s most wonderful, entertaining, decadent and alternative individual.
