Wild Fruit off the park ! 07-08-2010
Wild Fruit have been involved in Brighton Pride since day one. It is something we care passionately about. We have raised funds year upon year to see that this fantastic event builds upon past successes and is a great example of a combined LGBT community effort.

As a local gay owned/gay run business, the Pride event encapsulates our out and proud minded ethos, and our commitment to the LGBT community. We have always been Prides staunchest supporter!

Despite all the controversy surrounding Pride over the last few months, we have worked tirelessly with the organisation to try and address some of the key issues surrounding the 2010 event and it’s staging and funding. This included suggesting many varied ways that Pride may raise essential funds to ensure that the production goes ahead, and that there are funds raised for Pride to carry on it’s charitable work.

We were also keen to address the problems of underage drinking, illegal alcohol sellers and safety on site.

As contracted bar operators for the Pride event we are required to make large payments to the organisation in advance of the event for our bars contract. Since last year’s losses by Pride, we were advised to request to view Pride’s financial situation before handing over, not only our own money, but that of businesses who sub contract bars from us on the park.

We have made it very clear to Pride that, without receiving or viewing written financial reassurances that Pride has enough funding to stage the event in it’s entirety (including both the dance and cabaret tents), we are not prepared to commit any funds. This is a simple procedure that would be required by any bank, business or institution under the present circumstances.

After witnessing the cancellation of the Beachdown festival last year, we felt it only fair and transparent that Pride demonstrate to us that sufficient funds are in place to implement some positive health and safety controls, stage this years event with all the main attractions, and provide insurance cover for our license fee.

Pride however have not shown us any proof that funds are in place to stage the full event despite our enquiries, and so we have found ourselves in a difficult position. We cannot gamble blindly with both ours and other businesses money, and so it has come as some surprise that we have received written notification from Pride that our bars contract has been terminated.

It is saddening to think that this really is the end of a great chapter in Pride’s history, when local LGBT businesses were key to the event and essential funds were raised for our voluntary groups.

There will of course still be a huge number of fantastic parties and club events to mark Brighton Pride regardless of what does or does not happen at Preston Park. We would urge everyone to show their support for these, as well as all the other local small gay run and gay owned LGBT businesses who make up our community, without whom there would be very little genuine Brighton spirit to the Pride weekend.

We will continue to raise essential funds through our Pride weekend events towards our local voluntary sector.

WILD FRUIT PRIDE HISTORY 1995-2009 Aeon Events & Wild Fruit was awarded ‘Long term business supporter of Pride’ for our support of Brighton Pride in 2007.

Wild Fruit was one of the first businesses to become involved with Brighton's Pride festival by hosting the very first dance tent at the Pride event on 'The Level' in 1995 (well around that time, we just can’t remember its so long ago !).

Since those days Wild Fruit has hosted the dance tent each year and has held the official post Pride party in such prestigious City venues as The 5000 capacity Brighton Centre, The Brighton Dome, Brighton racecourse as well as special fundraising events throughout the year.

'Aeon Events & Wild Fruit have been one of Prides main sponsors and staunchest supporters contributing over £75K to date in fundraising & sponsorship, helping to keep Brighton Pride one of the countries largest FREE events.'
